🚨 TL;DR:
On September 1, 2026, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT for Healthcare now connects directly to Epic, the EHR oligopoly holding records for 325M+ patients. Clinicians can summarize charts, pull history, review labs, and prep for visits without leaving the patient record.
OpenAI also shipped a Healthcare Public Data plugin wired into nine official sources, including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. Eligible U.S. ChatGPT for Clinicians users can install it on their own. Inside an enterprise workspace, an administrator has to switch it on.
That is the entire pitch deck of literally a thousand healthtech startups. “AI that plugs into your EHR and saves clinicians time.” Absorbed in one press release.
None of this is a technology breakthrough. It is a distribution event. And let’s be real. (We should probably say it again, because smart people have been saying it for years.) Distribution was the only real moat these companies ever had..
The survivors will be the ones with deep workflow integration, highly specialized medical data, regulated write-back capabilities, and the willingness to own liability. Not the ones with a prompt and a RAG bolt-on. Duh…
